The leather is very thin (1mm~) and the flesh side isnt very soft so it feels like it is going to cut you when youre putting it on.

Iball stretcher started with and still often use stainless steel rings from the hardware store. Not exactly DYI but a good value and not what everyone else uses. Cheaper then most any ball weight from an on line seller. I use the 2.5 inch inner diameter ones. They are a quarter of a pound per ring.
